THE SHIP

To a pilgrim who had come from afar – or was about to leave for an overseas destination – is to be attributed this graffito, which certainly represents a vessel of Nordic and conceptually early medieval tradition.

Comparison is possible, in fact, with the boats depicted in the Bayeux Tapisserie: note, in particular, the high prow ending in a dragon’s head, as well as the sail equipment clearly referable to that which came to the Normans by cultural inheritance from the Vikings.

The graffito has a base size of 10 cm and a height of 5 cm.
