PAVING AND PATHS
Probably in its heyday, between the 11th and 12th centuries, the cult in the cave reached its peak. A church was built outside, the entrance system to the cave was modified and the routes inside the cave were improved.
The internal routes are regularised by the construction of a pavement, made of properly juxtaposed limestone slabs, which eliminates the unevenness of the floor, making the walk easier.
At present, these slabs are almost completely dismantled, but still lie piled up in quantity in the peripheral areas of the galleries.
Obstacles constituted by the large rock concretions along the routes are also removed; the most dangerous unevennesses are eliminated by forming steps through the careful cutting of the rocky bank.
